Drone technology is significantly being used in the infrastructure industry to boost efficiency and productivity. Unmanned airborne systems (UAS) have the potential to revolutionize the science and practice of remote sensing, and most particularly the utilization of Small-UAS enables a range of novel remote sensing capabilities ( Lippitt and Zhang, 2018). Therefore, compared to the traditional approach drone technology provides an accurate, cost-effective, fast, and safe working distance suitable for stockpile volumetric computations in open pit quarries. Both estimations are less than the maximum allowable percentage error of ± 3%. The drone percentage error to the actual volume is 2.6% while the traditional approach is 1.3%. The generated Pix4D quality report showed a root mean square error of 0.019. Findings show that the smaller the error of the checkpoints the more accurate the generated model making the measurements reliable. Drone-captured images are processed in Pix4D mapper software and geometric techniques are applied to the traditional survey approach. The methodology comprises using a drone and traditional survey approach to measure the volume of a known quarry stockpile. A mapping framework is proposed to guide mine personnel on how to conduct open-pit stockpile volumetric computations. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. Meanwhile, NOAA researchers continue to investigate the next generation of weather radar technology, phased array, as a possible future replacement for NEXRAD.The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. (Photo Courtesy: National Severe Storms Laboratory)Įven though the NEXRADs have now exceeded their original life-span estimate of 20 years, the radars are currently undergoing a Service Life Extension Program to keep them operating reliably into the 2030’s. The insert in the images shows the dual polarization correlation coefficient (CC) product denoting the location of debris produced by the tornado. Radar reflectivity (left) and radar velocity (right) around time of an EF1 tornado west of Marion, Wisconsin. The NWS currently operates 159 of these NEXRAD systems and they have undergone several upgrades during 20+ years of operation, including a further increase in resolution, and most recently, an upgrade to dual polarization technology, which provides forecasters a new wealth of information about precipitation including size and shape, better amount estimates, ability to see different types such as rain, snow, and hail, and the ability to differentiate from non-precipitation returns like birds, bugs, and even tornado debris! Also, the addition of Doppler velocities increased the ability for severe weather detection and warning by allowing forecasters to see wind fields and possible rotation within thunderstorms. It increased the resolution of the data, allowing forecasters to see storms in much finer detail. The NEXRAD System provided marked improvements for the NWS. After being developed and tested through the 1980s by the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory and partners, the first of these Next-Generation Radar systems (NEXRAD) were deployed operationally beginning in 1992. This allowed forecasters not just to see location and intensity of the precipitation along with basic storm movement, but the movement of the precipitation and winds within the storm itself. NWS Wilmington (OH) WSR-57 Radar image of supercells with hook echoes during 1974 Super Outbreak (courtesy of NCDC)Īround the same time period, researchers began developing a new generation of radars that would incorporate the use of Doppler radar. These radars provided similar data but with newer and more reliable components. An updated version, the WSR-74, supplemented and replaced the older radars beginning in 1977. The technology was refined and in 1959 the NWS began rolling out its first network of radars dedicated to a national warning network. Navy donated 25 surplus radars to the NWS (then known as the Weather Bureau), marking the start of a U.S. Investigation into this phenomenon resulted in the discovery that these echoes were returns from the precipitation, unmasking a further use for the technology. Analysts noted in periods of heavy weather, the radar would return strange signals. But the use of radar for weather observations occurred by accident. The concept of RAdio Detection and Ranging (Radar)began in the late 1800’s and by World War II, radar was in use by militaries around the world, scanning for incoming airplanes. Doppler radar sends the energy in pulses and listens for any returned signal. I think post was helpful in at least encouraging me that it might not be broken and I kept trying. Thanks again, I'm going to try a bunch of installations/rebooting/whatever and report back :)Īfter days of trying, dozens of forum posts read, and several setup videos watched, I finally figured it out (no help from any of those resources unfortunately). Long story short: the only way I saw drivers get installed with the installation of Traktor Pro was either through a not-so-official version of v3 or through the v2 update through Native Access (which didn't give me the option of WHICH ones to install). Their v3 demo (which is v3.11.8) didn't prompt for drivers either, but a v3.0.1 that I acquired elsewhere did have a driver prompt during the installation - only problem was they only had S2 Mk2 drivers, no Mk1. But if I run Native Access, it has an update available which ends up installing all their drivers (which makes removing it a pain in the ass because I have to uninstall about a dozen separate driver installations). The latest demo that they offer of v2 doesn't seem to prompt me for drivers during the installation. Curious, what version of the Traktor software were you using? 2 or 3? And was yours a S2 Mk1, also? I only rebooted once, maybe I'll try a few combinations of uninstalling/rebooting/reinstalling/rebooting/etc. I did read something similar on an NI forum post about some folks reinstalling it and rebooting a few times and it finally worked. I have tried several combinations of updates / installations (even a few non-demo versions that NI may not be happy about me trying). I would think if it was broken, it wouldn't be seen by Windows or their Control Panel tool. From what I can tell, Windows AND their own diagnostic tool sees it online, but the Traktor software doesn't (which is kinda important). So am I missing something? Is there something special that needs to be done for the Traktor Pro software to see that it's plugged in? I am willing to purchase the software, but only after I can confirm the device works. I've also tried it with a 12volt/2-amp power adapter (device says it accepts 9 to 20 volt DC) - but from what I've seen, that shouldn't be necessary. I've tried it with and without a powered USB hub (everything says don't use a hub, except their troubleshooting doc which says DO use a powered hub). In Traktor Pro 3 & 2 I can manually add a Controller for the Traktor Kontrol S2 (or any of their devices, for that matter), but under In-Port there is only the option for "None". If I run Traktor Kontrol S2 Control Panel, it shows that it's plugged in and I can click the "Start" button under System Performance Test and it seems to be able to communicate with the device. Before I installed the drivers, it would show as an unknown device, which now is no longer the case. Device Manager shows a few Traktor devices under various groups in the hardware list. Windows DOES recognize that it's plugged in (since installing the drivers). I've installed Traktor Pro 3 demo and Traktor 2 demo, neither of which recognize that anything is plugged in. After installing the drivers, which I downloaded from native instruments website, I can plug it into USB, turn it on, and the lights cycle in a "powering on" kinda way, but afterwards only the USB light is illuminated with an orange color.
